ASK VANCE: The Best Questions and Answers from Memphis Magazine’s History and Trivia Expert
In September 1992, the mysterious Vance Lauderdale made his first appearance in the pages of
Memphis Magazine. His “Ask Vance” column solved local “mysteries of history” and quickly
became a hit with readers. In 2003, we asked him to compile some of his favorite columns into
book form.
Here, he shares stories about:
• The two children’s faces carved into the stones at Idlewild Presbyterian Church
• The pair of empty graves at Elmwood Cemetery
• The log cabin concealed within the walls of a Rhodes College sorority house
• Memphian Roy Noe’s unique invention for “prosperity, health, and happiness”
• The hazard of the time capsule buried at the Mid-South Fairgrounds
• The sculpture in Overton Park described as “a vicious beast” when it was unveiled
• The “bomb” planted in the front yard of a home in East Memphis
• And much more
